Witnessing Victims’ Resistance to Violence and Oppression

A Two-Day Seminar in Response-Based Practice

Dr. Allan Wade, Ph.D.

Hosted by the Canadian Resource Centre for Victims of Crime

This workshop will present current research on violence, trauma, language and social responses in cases of violence. Participants will learn gentle, straight forward and effective interviewing skills for honouring victims’ responses and resistance to violence, identifying offenders’ pre-existing ability to act respectfully, and promoting positive social responses.

‘Witnessing Victims’ Resistance to Violence and Oppression’ is for human service workers — counsellors, therapists, nurses, physicians, justice and court workers, Crown counsel, lawyers, victims’ services workers, transition house workers, shelter staff, womens’ advocates, social workers, child protection workers, police, journalists, researchers — and anyone in the role of helping others, particularly those who have experienced violence, mistreatment or other forms of violation.

MAY is sexual assault awareness month

Sexual violence is used every day across Canada by perpetrators to assert power and control over their victims. Few survivors report what has happened to them to the police. For example, in Ottawa, 8 women are sexually assaulted every day… and only 1 will ever report it to the police (Hidden from Sight, OCTEVAW 2009).

The CRCVC is calling upon all Canadians to join the efforts in your community to end all forms of sexual violence!

1. Federal Symposium
Hosted by the Department of Justice Canada

Registration is free and includes access to all sessions, as well as complimentary lunch and refreshments. As space is limited, we encourage you to register early. The deadline for registration is April 12, 2010.

The day will begin with an opening ceremony and keynote address by the Honourable Judge Gerald M. Morin, a remarkable judicial leader from Saskatchewan. Workshops following throughout the day will focus on various topics including: the Community Impact of Hate Crimes; How Families Experience the Criminal Justice System; and a chance to provide input into the planning for the renewal of the Government of Canada’s Federal Victims Strategy.

22 July 2010 - A "Cry for Justice - A Murdered Child's Legacy" is Sandra Martins-Toner's sequel to her first book "The Last Six Minutes - A Mothers Loss & Quest for justice," will be available in just a few short weeks. Order your copy now.
July 5, 2010 - Application forms are now available online from the Criminal Injuries Compensation Board in Ontario. Forms are available in both English and French. Visit www.cicb.gov.on.ca to view them. The Board hopes to make the process easier for victims and reduce the time taken to process claims.
23 June 2010 - On the 25th anniversary of the bombing of Air India flight 182, the CRCVC remembers the 329 passengers and crew who lives were stolen. We stand in solidarity with the victims on this National Day of Remembrance for Victims of Terrorism. Watch Prime Minister Harper's apology to the victims' families.

CRI-VIFF (the Interdisciplinary Research Center on Family Violence and Violence Against Women) and its Women, Violence and Vulnerable Situations research team are pleased to invite you to the Second International Conference on Violence Against Women. The conference will be held in Montreal from May 29 to June 1, 2011. Researchers, practitioners, policy makers and students are also invited to submit abstracts on topics related to the Conference theme and sub-themes for presentation in the Conference. The deadline for submission of the abstract is August 15, 2010. Four types of format can be submitted: oral presentation, poster presentation, symposium and workshop on innovative experiences.
