Coping with the Holidays

The holiday season can be a difficult and stressful time for those who have experienced violence or lost loved ones through victimization. It is not uncommon for survivors to encounter heightened emotions over their trauma and loss during this time. While many around them—at the office, in the streets, even at home—march into the holidays in festive moods, full of love and joy, there are those who become overwhelmed with a variety of emotions at the mere thought of Christmas carols, eggnog, or family gatherings.

Many people experience feelings of joy while sharing a feast with their loved ones, there are those who might dwell on the one person who is missing from the dinner table. The Office for Victims of Crime offers an insightful article on the difficulties that many victims and survivors face during the holidays. The article offers coping suggestions that come from victims, such as: “Change Traditions”, “Create a Special Tribute”, “Relive Fond Memories”, “Set Aside Some Letting Go Time” and “Find a Creative Outlet.”
