Budget 2010 - Increasing Support for Victims of Crime

One of the most common frustrations that victims of crime report is that they feel excluded from the Canadian justice system. They want to be heard and respected. Canadians who have been the victim of a crime deserve to have a strong advocate within government. Budget 2006 announced the Federal Victims Strategy, which enhanced programming, and created the Federal Ombudsman for Victims of Crime. Building on this investment, Budget 2010 provides funding of $6.6 million over two years, to enhance support for victims of crime, including providing facilitated access to EI sickness benefits for eligible workers who have lost a family member as a result of a crime.

The CRCVC is pleased by the announcements made in the 2010 federal budget.

July 5, 2010 - Application forms are now available online from the Criminal Injuries Compensation Board in Ontario. Forms are available in both English and French. Visit www.cicb.gov.on.ca to view them. The Board hopes to make the process easier for victims and reduce the time taken to process claims.
23 June 2010 - On the 25th anniversary of the bombing of Air India flight 182, the CRCVC remembers the 329 passengers and crew who lives were stolen. We stand in solidarity with the victims on this National Day of Remembrance for Victims of Terrorism. Watch Prime Minister Harper's apology to the victims' families.
22 June 2010 - Read the CRCVC's presentation for the Senate committee on Bill C-23A, amending the Criminal Records Act (pardons).
17 June 2010 - CRCVC's brief to the Senate in support of repealing the faint hope clause
15 June 2010 - World Elder Abuse Awareness Day is June 15th each year. It serves as a call-to-action for individuals, organizations, and communities to raise awareness about elder abuse, neglect, and exploitation. Many local organizations schedule events on and around June 15th.

CRI-VIFF (the Interdisciplinary Research Center on Family Violence and Violence Against Women) and its Women, Violence and Vulnerable Situations research team are pleased to invite you to the Second International Conference on Violence Against Women. The conference will be held in Montreal from May 29 to June 1, 2011. Researchers, practitioners, policy makers and students are also invited to submit abstracts on topics related to the Conference theme and sub-themes for presentation in the Conference.
