He Did Not Deserve to Die the Way He Did – Ashton’s Story

On June 26, 2017, a tragic event devastated a family when 25-year-old Ashton James Dickson was fatally shot outside an Ottawa bar. His father describes Ashton as “a wonderful man, a superior athlete, and loving friend” who possessed strong personal values and treated others with kindness.

Ashton was a talented football player pursuing professional dreams in the CFL. As an All-Canadian running back for StFX University’s X-Men, he achieved the distinction of becoming “the school’s all-time leader in rushing yards.” The 2017 X-Men football season was dedicated to his memory.

The circumstances surrounding his death were particularly tragic. “Ashton was left bleeding in the street after an altercation in the bar and sadly succumbed to his injuries.” Despite the investigation, no charges were initially filed, leaving the family without closure and the community at risk.

In response to this loss, Ashton’s father partnered with the Canadian Resource Centre for Victims of Crime to address gun violence in Ottawa, which experienced a record 69 shootings in 2017. He also advocated for safety measures in downtown bars and restaurants, recognizing that youth and alcohol consumption correlate with violent victimization risk.

Additionally, he worked to establish a weekly support group for people experiencing loss due to violence, expressing gratitude for the centre’s victim advocacy work.
