Donna and her husband Sedrick relocated from Ottawa to Jamaica, Sedrick’s homeland, intending to establish a business together. This decision provoked a violent response from others in the community.
Two men arrived at their residence to confront Sedrick. Donna quickly retrieved her phone and took refuge in the bathroom adjoining their bedroom while her husband confronted one of the attackers downstairs.
From her concealed location, Donna experienced a devastating moment. She recalled: “I called 9-1-1, hoping that the police would respond urgently and save our lives. I heard the shot while I was on the phone talking with the dispatcher and while the second man was kicking in the bedroom door.”
On November 17, 2013, Sedrick was killed by gunshot. This traumatic event fundamentally altered the trajectory of Donna’s life. Despite the passage of time, those responsible for Sedrick’s death remain unapprehended and at large.
