Summer update from the office

Confucius said, “Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life.” At the Canadian Resource Centre for Victims of Crime, we honestly feel so fortunate to do this work. We are inspired every day by our clients’ resilience and overcoming. Despite the violence and trauma they have endured, survivors can and do find healing and wellness.

Summertime is usually a little quieter around the office. The federal and provincial governments are on summer recess and people across the country are getting outside to enjoy the weather while they can. Many service providers are on holidays and taking a reprieve from their busy schedules, which is a good thing. Rest is important.

As we gear up for the fall and the buzz that comes with back to school, we are always thinking about improving our services. Ensuring that we offer trauma- and violence-informed services is so key. Part of this work has been to start a peer support group for family members of homicide victims in the Ottawa area. Partnering with the Ottawa Police Victim Crisis Unit, we are now offering a monthly drop-in group where families can connect with others who truly understand their feelings and experiences. Seeing the support these survivors offer each other has been inspiring.

We also continue to search for ways to reach and serve victims using technology. In late 2017,  we added live chat capability to our website and hope to eventually add texting support as well. Offering live chat support online during the evenings has allowed us to reach more victims and those who may hesitate to call a helpline for various reasons. As always our goal is to help victims’ access support and provide information to assist them to navigate the criminal justice system.

The Canadian Resource Centre for Victims of Crime offers support, research and education to survivors and stakeholders.
